“Oh, Captain, my Captain…”
With apologies to Walt Whitman and his allegory on Lincoln, our Captain held his Cup in absentia this past weekend. While he nurses the lovely Shawn and we wish them well, the NGC braved the elements on his behalf!
The foreboding clouds (and a few showers on the way to the course) were not enough to deter a hardy group of NGC stalwarts who came out to Bossenstein Golf and Polo Club for a soggy slog through hither and yon. In addition to sand traps and LOTS of water hazards, the intrepid field battled fallen leaves, deep rough, soggy fairways and soft greens to contest this version of the Captain’s Cup. And a good time was had by all (with the exception of one group caught in the rain at the end!)
As usual there were winners on the day and they follow. The skills prizes proved elusive to both genders with only one of each being gained. Arvid “Snake” Halvorsen took men’s nearest to the pin and ladies long drive went to Wendy Bashnan. And let us say that we are really pleased to see two new members leading the way in these skill competitions! A special welcome to David Taylor, the New Zealand Ambassador to NATO, the EU and Sweden, along with his Defense Attaché, Sean Arndell. They were the other two of the four new members joining us for the first time.
In Category 1, Jeff DaRin and James Mackey tied, with Jeff taking first place on count-back. For Category 2, first place honors went to yours truly, with Robert Adams as runner-up.
The Captain’s Cup is presented to the player with the best Stableford Score on the day. This was Jeff DaRin. I know Jim wishes that he could have presented the Cup in person!
To all who came out, a hearty thanks! And for all who missed the outing, we hope to see you on our next competition with the International Golf Club (IGC) on Saturday 11 November at the lovely and challenging Hulencourt Golf Club!
