Saturday dawned better than anyone had hoped and the Captain’s Cup at Bercuit was blessed with a sunny sky, calm winds and comfortable temperatures. Eighteen intrepid golfers showed for a challenging day of golf amid good friends and guest players. Bercuit is a Robert Trent Jones design that blends hilly terrain with bunker defended finishes and some devilish greens. The course was in great shape despite the preceding days of rain and players were treated to some challenging holes of golf. A few areas were soft or downright soggy but, on the whole, the course played well. Players who knew the course definitely had an advantage but the field overall had a tough day on the links. In particular, the pin placements led to many challenging putts and quite a few mutterings on the way to the next tee.
The field was divided in three groups with the first two playing stroke play with full handicaps. The third group played Stableford. The difficulty encountered was reflected in several ‘no card’ results as we quaffed Belgian refreshment and regaled each other with our tales of woe.
The long drive for men went to Daniel Darius and our two women participants were off the fairway yielding no winner. For the unisex closest to the pin on the course signature hole, number five, Dick Whittingham took the honors. The low score of the day was carded by Tom Taylor with a net 73 and Berit Nielsen had the best Stableford score with 31 points.
Based on the chatter in the clubhouse (the weather failed us and denied us the terrace for our prize-giving) it seems that everyone enjoyed the day regardless of how they played. After all, a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day in the office!
